Carnival on Lake Como
Cari amici, dear Lake Como friends. You know Carnival is celebrated only once a year and it is also extensively acclaimed around the Lake of Como.
Masked balls, Carnival Parades and Lots of fun
Events and carnival parades take place in many places during the Carnival days.
In Villatico, a picturesque district of Colico on the eastern shore of Lake Como, the carnival begins on Saturday, 3rd of February 2018.
The event starts at 8.45 p.m. at the Oratorio di Villatico. The proceeds support social projects of the association “Illumina di Blu-Valsassina”.
On Saturday, 10th of February 2018, you can plunge into the carnival together with your Bambini.
At 3.00 p.m. begins the children’s carnival in Colico-Laghetto.
For the adults, it will be continued in the evening at 8.15 pm with a parade of the “Re Carnevale” and a subsequent funny event.
On Sunday, 11th. of February 2018 at 2.00 p.m. starts the carnival procession with musical accompaniment of the Corpo Musicale of Villatico-Colico.
It will also be funny on the western shore of Lake Como. The villages of Domaso and Verbana together organize the traditional carnival parade on Sunday, 4th of February 2018.
It starts at 1.30 p.m. at the church square in Domaso.
After the return of the parade the event will be continued with music, dancing and refreshments on the sports ground of the Oratory.
On Saturday, 10th of February 2018, your children will once again get their money’s worth. At 2.00 p.m. the “Carnival di Bambini a Menaggio” starts at the Lido of Menaggio.
The different Carnival of Schignano
In an unusual way, the carnival is celebrated in the picturesque village of Schignano above Argegno.
There, participants of the carnival parade carry elaborate, hand-carved masks made of walnut wood. Some of these masks are over 200 years old.
On the Saturday of the carnival, at noon, the historic carnival procession begins on the Piazza di Schignano.
The masks and figures look very different. There are the friendly looking masks called “i belli”, in extravagant, colorful clothes and ringing cheerful bells.
In contrast to them are “i brutti”, in shabby clothes, ugly masks and with clanking cowbells.
In addition, a brass band accompanies the dancing masks in the picturesque streets of Schignano. This kind of carnival is unusual but very worth seeing.
I’m definitely there. However, I do not know if you’ll recognize me. My tip: I definitely belong to i belli!
Carnival in the Brianza
Last but not least, I would like to draw your attention to the Carnevale di Cantú in the Brianza, very close to Como. Carnival parades will take place downtown Cantù on 28th of January as well as on the 4th, 11th and 17th of February 2018.
On Saturday, 17th of February 2018, the winning car of these moves will be awarded as part of the grand finale.
You see amici, carnival is a very busy time around Lake Como.
Come on and join in!
