Carnival on Lake Como
Cari amici, the time has come! Carnival is celebrated around Lake Como. Carnival parades and masked balls take place in Bellagio, Civenna, Como, Varenna, Menaggio and other places. For further information for events in Bellagio and Civenna click here.
In Schignano, a picturesque village above Argegno, carnival is celebrated in a very special way. The participants of the carnival parade are wearing artful, hand-carved masks made of walnut. Some of these masks are over 200 years old. On Carnival Saturday, at high noon, the historical carnival parade starts from the Piazza of Schignano.
The masks and figures have different effects. There are the friendly looking masks, called “i Belli”, “the beauties”, with magnificent, colorful clothes and a joyful peal of bells. In contrast, there are “i brutti”, “the ugly”, wearing shabby clothes, ugly masks and decorated with clanking cowbells. The dancing masks are accompanied by a brass band. The scenic piazza of Schignano and the picturesque narrow alleys are a perfect setting for the carnival hustle and bustle that often lasts till morning has broken. Of course, there will be offered plenty to eat and drink for the audience and the participants.
The Carnival of Schignano is over on Tuesday at midnight, when a straw puppet called the “Carlisep”, is burned on the Piazza. For further information of the carnival events in Schignano click here.
How about amici, will you be there? However, I do not know if you’ll recognize me. But I am definitely one of the “i belli”!
Tanti saluti e a presto
