Lake of Como – Eternal Love
Category Tradition by Marion Mollenhauer
In Italy and therefore at the Lake of Como there is a vey nice old tradition which goes particularly good with todays Valentine’s Day: Lovers meet together at rivers or lakes and fix so-called “love-locks” – “Lucchetti dell’ Amore” – on steely balustrades, gratings or bike-racks. Before doing this the lovers write their initials on the padlock. Often the calendar date is added or a photo is glued on. The lock will be fixed and closed on the balustrade. The lovers throw the keys into the water and so the lock will be fixed forever. This tradition is meant as a symbol for “Eternal Love”. Some years ago it jumped over the Alps and was specially picked up by Lovers in Cologne. There are thousands of “love-locks” hanging on one of the Rhine-bridges. We wish and hope, that the “Lucchetti dell’ Amore” and also the love of the romantic couples may never rust.
